ELBOW @ THE O2 ARENA- 28TH MARCH

ELBOW @ THE O2 LONDON 28TH MARCH

ELBOW @ THE O2 LONDON 28TH MARCH

As with most people I know I only really got into Elbow with the Mercury Award winning ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ album which when you consider the band have been around for 20 years makes me feel a bit…well, slack?
One of the Pro’s of being a latecomer to any band is that you’ve got a ready made stack of catalogue at your disposal and after a a brief delve you realise you actually knew loads of their stuff already which kind of legitimises your claim on the band in the first place!

Last nights gig at the O2 arena was a little bit of a dream. Despite feeling a bit young and scruffy in the predominantly posh 35+ crowed we had an incredible night. We had 4 of the best seats in the house thanks to a very lovely Paul Newman and even with me being practically blind without my glasses I could still make out the beads of sweat of Guy Garvey’s face!

The sound was absolutely perfect, which isn’t easy to achieve in such a large venue. The setlist flowed from the wonderfully delicate such as ‘Some Riot’ and ‘Weather to Fly’ through to belters like ‘Neat Little Rows’ and ‘Grounds For Divorce’ which take on a whole new life is that environment. It was as if they were written for a stadium gig!
The crowed fizzed with excitement as a giant mirrorball descended from the ceiling and the opening notes of ‘Mirrorball’ echoed out across the arena accompanied by all the sparkly sparkles that the actual mirrorball sprinkled upon us. Beautiful.

They finished up with the epic ‘One a day like this’ to which the entire audience stood up and sang along word for word. It was pretty cheesy, and you were definitely a million miles away from feeling in any way ‘cool’, but fuck it… It was a night to remember.

My only gripe is that they didn’t play ‘Fugitive Motel’

Roll on Glastonbury where i’m considering making a banner that reads ‘Not till Guy sings me my song am I going anywhere’

RIDER OWN STORES WEBSITE

Our good friend Adi Gilbert from 99seconds has been working on the new website for Rider Own Stores, this is what Adi had to say on it – “The site is designed to help out those independent, rider owned and run stores in the UK who put so much into our scene and industry. Its basically a directory of shops by region who are keeping it real. Big corporate shops and web stores might sometimes get the best prices but they don’t often contribute to the lifeblood of the scene in the way that rider owned indies do. I’m not going to rant about it but if you’re interested and want to find out more about the issue please check out the site and see for yourself.”
Support the scene, go check it out..

WILD PALMS – UNTIL SPRING – ALBUM REVIEW

Wild Palms-Until Spring

Wild Palms – Until Spring (One Little Indian)

When I was asked to write this review I must admit I thought ‘here’s another band with a non-descript name and nothing much in the way of originality’. To be fair though, I hadn’t listened to the music at that point.
Until Spring is the debut album from Wild Palms and it is urgent whilst epic, spacious yet claustrophobic, angry yet serene. It’s a contradiction of an album but then that’s how first albums ought to be – the first collection of songs from a group on their way up regardless of any over-riding image or style. There are elements of Bloc Party, Delphic, Roxy Music and the Cooper Temple Clause but Wild Palms definitely have an identity of their own.

Q + A SESSION WITH WILD PALMS

Wild Palms are an exciting North London based band who have just released their debut album. Lou Hill from the band took the time out of their busy European tour to answer a few questions about how things are going for them so far.

You’ve just released your debut album ‘Until Spring‘ and I was blown away by the beauty of it. What were your influences on the album?

We wanted to take people by surprise and create something that I think a lot of people thought we wouldn’t be capable of. We were always getting tagged as angular post-punk and we didn’t think people were really getting it, We wanted to make an album that was subtle and transcended the shit around us, we cultivated a sound that we thought could hold water for the length of an album, with songs that all worked together to create a certain atmosphere. We wanted to create something that demands patience from the listener.

THE MARS VOLTA TO PLAY SONISPHERE

Yes, Mars Volta are confirmed to play this years Sonisphere festival at Knebworth!
They will be joining Biffy Clyro, Weezer and the Gallows to name but a few on Saturday.
It seems that this year they’ve broadened the spectrum slightly with the ‘alternative rock” Saturday sandwiched between the heavier Friday and Sunday shows from Metallica, Anthrax, Slipknot and Motorhead.

Mustn’t speak too soon tho a there are still plenty of acts to be announced.
Who knows, the Kings Of Leon could pop up somewhere!?

Here is a little video Interview of the man behind the scenes at Kilimanjaro Stuart Galbraith talking about this years festival;
