Those of a similar age to me may remember the John Cooper Clarke from those ‘English Anthology’ books we had during our GCSE’s? Alongside the likes of Armitage and Duffey John Cooper Clarke was a breath of fresh air…

There aren’t many people around like John Cooper Clarke but his influence can clearly be seen in the likes of Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys) and Russell Brand. Its the regional dialect and fast paced, in your face, gritty lyrics in Arctic Monkeys songs that remind me of Johnny Clarke. Especially from the first album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not
